As I approached the entrance of Gleneagles Golf Course, I realized how easy it is to miss. In fact, I drove past it twice before finally paying attention to my navigation system. Once inside, a remarkable transformation occurred—I entered an oasis, momentarily forgetting that I was still within the city limits. This ability to disconnect from the outside world and immerse oneself in the game is one of the treasured perks of golf.
A Journey Through Time
Gleneagles Golf Course holds a rich history that adds to its allure. Originally built by Jack Fleming in 1962 as McLaren Park Golf Course, it was later renamed Gleneagles International Golf Course. The construction of the 9-hole course alone cost over $500,000—a considerable investment at the time, not including the price of the land itself.
Exploring the Greens
It took a few holes for me to truly feel the greens underfoot, but by the 6th hole, I was attuned to their unique characteristics. Despite the wet conditions, the greens at Gleneagles Golf Course rolled impressively true. I discovered that after 50 years of Poa annua greens, a switch was made to bentgrass, further enhancing the overall playing experience.
The Enigmatic 19th Hole
One cannot talk about Gleneagles Golf Course without mentioning its remarkable 19th hole, sometimes referred to as the 10th hole. It is renowned for boasting an extensive collection of almost every Scottish whiskey imaginable. While current circumstances prevented me from entering the bar due to Covid-19 health and county restrictions, I caught a glimpse of its inviting ambiance, evoking a sense of closeness and intimacy.
