The Links at Spanish Bay: Experiencing the History

Pebble Beach, Ca

Tucked between the Pacific Ocean and the Del Monte Forest, The Links at Spanish Bay offers a captivating golfing experience. Collaboratively designed by renowned architects Robert Trent Jones Jr., Tom Watson, and Sandy Tatum in 1987, this course reflects the unique contributions of each designer.

The golf course plan was submitted to the Coastal Commission in the 1980’s, and once it was approved, the course design was in the works. Each of these course architects have built quite the reputation, and as you play the course, you get to experience a piece of each one of them.

The Links at Spanish Bay

To be honest, I was unsure of what to expect when returning to The Links at Spanish Bay. As a junior golf competitor, I had played here numerous times, understanding the course’s caliber but failing to appreciate its architectural beauty and natural layout. My focus was solely on each individual shot, without considering the bigger picture. However, as a golf traveler, revisiting this course brought an entirely fresh perspective. It felt as if I were playing an entirely new and captivating course since my last visit.

The sweeping sand dunes and strategically placed bunkers provide both guidance and challenge throughout the fairways. The contoured greens, featuring multi tiers and tricky chipping areas, demand precision and skill.

One cannot overlook the impact of the oceanic elements, particularly the prevailing winds, which add an invisible hazard to the game. Whether playing along the coastline or not, the breeze constantly reminds you of your surroundings, urging you to keep the ball low for better control.

Sandy aptly described the experience when he said, “It was as though we had been chosen by the Pope to make a sculpture in the Vatican of Golf.” And that’s exactly what they accomplished. The result is a masterpiece of a course that winds its way through majestic Monterey Pines, embraces picturesque sand dunes, and unveils breathtaking ocean vistas. The collaborative effort of these talented architects has created a golfing destination that draws players from all corners of the world. Playing The Links at Spanish Bay is an unforgettable experience that deserves a coveted spot on every golfer’s bucket list.

The Inn at Spanish Bay

During my visit, I had the pleasure of staying at The Inn at Spanish Bay, perfectly integrated with the course design. The recently renovated rooms feature gas-burning fireplaces, creating a cozy and aesthetically pleasing atmosphere. The breathtaking ocean views, coupled with the rolling fairways of the first hole, make waking up at The Inn feel like a dream.

Beyond the accommodations, The Inn offers an array of delightful dining options. With award-winning restaurants and stunning views, the culinary experience is a true delight not to be missed.

The Spanish Bay Bagpiper

To conclude the enchanting journey at Spanish Bay, a delightful tradition awaits on the first tee. As the sun sets, the captivating melodies of the Spanish Bay Bagpiper fill the air, bidding a harmonious farewell to the course. The soul-stirring tunes, reminiscent of traditional Scottish melodies, create an exquisite ambiance, providing the perfect backdrop to unwind and reflect on the day’s golfing adventures. It’s a truly beautiful and serene way to bring the day to a close at Spanish Bay.

Tee off into golfing wonders!
