Co. Wicklow, Ireland
County Wicklow, the “Garden of Ireland,” a stunning region just 45 minutes south of Dublin Airport. With its lush landscapes, serene lakes, and rugged mountains, it’s a haven for nature enthusiasts, AND Golfers. If you only have time to make a day trip to Wicklow, you can find some great day trip tours that will include the Powerscourt Estate.
Day One: Powerscourt Hotel & Distillery
My escape began with a warm welcome at Powerscourt Hotel, a 5-star establishment located on the gorgeous estate. I wasted no time in exploring, after check-in, I started off with a tour of the distillery. I immersed myself in the art of whiskey-making with a guided tour and tasting session. When in Ireland…right?

More importantly, I learned how to drink whiskey, which involves engaging all the senses and savoring the complexities. Begin by visually examining the color and clarity of the whiskey before swirling it gently to release its bouquet. Let me walk you through it:
1. Take a deep breath in.
2. Savor the first sip.
3. Let the whiskey rest in your mouth for a few seconds, allowing the flavors to dance on your palate.
4. Gently swallow and let the magic unfold.
5. Exhale and appreciate the lingering notes.
6. Indulge in the explosion of flavors and enjoy every moment.

After the whisky tasting experience, I returned to my hotel room to rest and refresh before our dinner reservation at the Sika Restaurant. This restaurant was a true gem, with impeccable service and a charming ambiance.
Day 2:
Teeing Off at Powerscourt Golf Course

We started the day early with breakfast overlooking the Sugar Loaf Mountain. Of course, as a golfer, I couldn’t resist a round at Powerscourt Golf Club. Consisting of two 18-hole courses: the East and the West, that day we tee-ed it up at the West course.

Knowing Ireland, I knew I had to pack all my rain gear. Luckily, it stayed pretty dry and sunny for my golf rounds, but I’m always prepared for a rainy day. This opening par 5 greeted me with a grand view of the iconic Powerscourt House (which we’ll visit later). You truly find yourself in a golfer’s paradise, just you and the course surrounded by the breathtaking views of the Wicklow Mountains.

To book a round, I simply mentioned my interest in playing a round at check-in, but it can get busy so it’s always best to email them ahead of time.
Discovering the Waterfalls and Gardens
After Golf, head over to the House and Gardens. One of the highlights of the estate is undoubtedly the infamous gardens. I explored the meticulously manicured Powerscourt Gardens, a masterpiece of design. I wandered through terraces, admired vibrant blooms, and found solace among ancient trees….

After exploring the gardens, I headed over to the Waterfalls. Took a leisurely stroll along the woodland paths to reach this natural wonder, which happens to be the highest waterfall in Ireland.

Day 3: Exploring Wicklow’s Treasures
While the Powerscourt Estate was captivating, I also had time to venture beyond its borders to explore County Wicklow.
Glendalough Lake: A Serene Oasis
Glendalough Lake is a serene oasis nestled in the Wicklow Mountains. There are plenty of food trucks and vendors at the entrance to grab a bite before exploring the area. OR pack some sandwiches and snacks, find a cozy spot by the lake, lay out a blanket, and take in the scenery.

Killruddery House and Gardens: A Historical Gem
Killruddery House and Gardens is a historical gem to explore. Just get lost here! From the grand house to the secret pathways, time will pass by. You can even enjoy tea and biscuits overlooking the property at their tea house.

Avondale Treetop Walk: An Adventure in the Canopy
For those craving adventure and breathtaking views, the Avondale Treetop Walk is a must-experience attraction. Suspended high above the forest floor, the walkway offers unparalleled views and historical facts on the nature and how forest came to be.

Exploring County Wicklow at the Powerscourt Estate was nothing short of remarkable. It offered the perfect blend of luxury, nature, and endless exploration right on the property. From the waterfall to the golf course, the distillery’s Irish whiskey, to the delectable dishes at Sika Restaurant, this estate truly offers something for everyone. If you have title to venture off property, definitely plan on exploring Wicklow’s treasures! Sláinte!
