A Comprehensive Guide for Winter Golfers
Rain or shine, a dedicated golfer knows that the show must go on. If you’ve ever found yourself caught in a downpour on the course or wondered how to navigate soggy fairways, this guide is your ticket to mastering the art of golfing in the rain. From gear recommendations to swing adjustments, I’ve got you covered for winter golf.

Choosing the Right Winter Golf Gear:
The first time I went camping, my dad told me, “you’re either going to love it or hate it and it’s going to solely depend on the gear you have and how prepared you are.” This is a concept I had applied to all my future endeavors. Winter golf is no different.
As the temperatures drop, my winter golf gear and accessories become my essentials. Of course, I’ll be wearing my thermal base layers, thermal socks, and probably my ear warmers, but, it’s all about finding the perfect balance between staying warm and still being able to swing a club under all these layers.
I’ll share my “secret” (not so secret) items I always have packed for a cold, rainy day on the golf course.
- waterproof apparel – make sure they are waterproof (not water resistant), be sure to apply a waterproof spray to your golf gear.
- golf bag rain cover – there is one that comes with your bag to cover your heads, but this one covers your WHOLE BAG
- rain grips – switch out your regular gloves for some rain grips, or pack extra gloves
- winter gloves – nobody likes to hit a stinger, especially with cold hands
- hand warmers – we can go with rechargeable, disposable, or the sleeve
- quick/dry towel – the course can get nasty and muddy, and na extra towel to dry your grips, face, and hands will be valuable
- umbrella – to be honest, these are only good when you have a pushcart that can holster it up, otherwise, umbrellas are just a hassle 😁
Cold-Weather Golf Accessories:
For those who love cruising the course in a golf cart, consider these additional items to keep you snug as you navigate the course:

- waterproof blanket – I didn’t think I’d ever need this, but it came in clutch when I played at Pebble Beach during a nasty storm
- golf cart rain cover – this brings your preparation to a whole new level
- golf cart heater – I haven’t tried this one, but if you do, please let me know your thoughts on it 😝

Course Management in Winter:
Golf course conditions in winter require a strategic approach to course management, emphasizing adaptability and careful decision-making. With colder temperatures and potentially wet conditions, we need to adjust our club and shot selections.
Some of my best practices in winter golf are as basic as it gets:
- play more club/distance, don’t be afraid to hit it past the pin
- aim conservatively off the tee
- aim for the center of the greens
- pay attention to wind/rain direction – I love the punch shots in winter
Like I said, basic, but if you commit to two items from the list above, you’ll be sure to improve your course management during the winter, and probably summer too… 😅

Stretching for Cold Weather:
Since it’s cold out, it’ll take a little more than the typical stretches to warm-up your body. Incorporate dynamic movements to increase blood flow and flexibility and include a few light cardio exercises like jumping jacks or jogging in place to raise your body temperature.
You’re most likely going to hit a stinger at some point during your round, so ease the pain on yourself by doing exercises that promote circulation in your hands and fingers, they are particularly susceptible to the cold.
Mindset and Mental Game in Winter Golf:
Prepping my mindset for winter golf is actually the best because never have I ever expected to play my best round while its pouring rain. I usually show up and think to myself, “whatever happens, happens”. I tend to play better in tougher conditions because I show up with zero expectations, if anything I expect to play crappy. When you take away the pressure of playing well, you give yourself room to play better.

Winter golf isn’t just a game; it’s an adventure waiting to unfold. So, put on your quirkiest winter golf gear and grab your clubs – winter is here rain 🌧️ ⛳️
